Located on a peninsula on the western side of the main continent, the Weyr is located just east of Ierne Island. It's not quite on the coast, but close enough that the beach is just a short flight away. The land surrounding the Weyr is made up of lowland plains as well as some gently rolling foothills, while the true mountains are somewhat further away. The Weyr itself is mostly underground, as it was built into a system of natural caverns which have been extended by hand and dragon power. The entrance leads into a large Dining Hall, and the rest of the Lower Caverns pretty much follows the rest of the Weyrs from there. Water is artificially heated. Because most of the weyr is located underground, the caverns are always a comfortable, cool temperature compared to the tropical heat outside.
The inside of Quindell's Caverns
Since Quindell is not a traditional mountain Weyr, the dragons have had to make due without cave weyrs. They live on the open land above the caverns; like other Southern Weyrs, the dragons have sheltered sand wallows instead of stone beds, and the riders live in small wooden or sometimes bricked huts beside their dragons.
The only true building is the Weyrling barracks, a long, low-slung building near the western edge of the weyr surrounding by sand wallows for the weyrlings. All of the younger weyrlings live in this building, two to a room, while their dragons live in the sand wallows closest to their room. Each room has two doors; one to the Weyrling common room indoors for lessons, a second that leads outside to the dragons' sand wallows.
At the other end of the area is the bend of a river beside the feeding pens, and to the north lies the Hatching Sands; sheltered from the rain but otherwise open to the elements and kept carefully heated. The open areas between these places are simply known as the common fields; they're the closest thing the Weyr has to a Weyrbowl.

Lying further out is the farmland where most of the Weyr's food is grown, tended by riders and non-riders alike, as well as more grazing land for herdbeasts.
The Holds are no longer required to tithe, but there is still a wealth of trade going on between the Weyr and the nearby holds. The greatest number of trade (and candidates) come from these four:
Quindell Hold: A large and densely populated hold located nearest to the Weyr. It is a coastal Hold which tends to suffer from severe storms often. The main trade is fish, but all crafts are present to one degree or another.
Elman Hold: A somewhat smallish Hold, it's located beside the river that runs past the Weyr. They produce a lot of food in the form of crops and fish, and there is a thriving trade in runnerbeasts.
Carbel Hold: It lies in a lightly forested area some distance inland. Lumber is a big trade here, as is mining and smithing.
Thern Hold: A small but bustling Hold located in the lowland plains, they grow some crops but the main source of trade comes from the Smith Crafthall located within the Hold.
